Three Thoughts on Immigration (Pocket Change)

The recently proposed House and Senate bills regarding illegal immigration raise ethical questions regarding American identity and cultural politics. On May 25, 2006 senate passed a bill that will have to be reconciled with the draconian Sensenbrenner bill passed by the House in December, 2005. That bill focuses on enforcement that would consider undocumented immigrants to be felons. It would also make it a crime for priests, nuns, health care workers and other social workers to offer help to undocumented immigrants.

“In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal ‘gringo’ invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlán (United States Southwest) from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny.” - Opening paragraph of El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan
