SIGN : LANGUAGE
Many traditional forms of handcraft, once prominent modes of communication, have fallen into disuse and are threatened by obsolescence in the digital age. With them has gone the presence of the maker's hand in much of the design, text, media, construction and imagery that makes up the narrative of our public and private environment. Hand cut relief printmaking, sign painting, and casting, among others, are still vital if underused means of creating a language of words, symbols and forms in which the creative hand is inherently evident.
Three artists explore these hands-on processes to create a new dialogue in languages both literal and intuitive. Further, they explore the hand itself, as a tool and as a metaphor. Their work, featuring human and animal body language, explores the way that gesture facilitates, replaces and sometimes stands at odds with written and spoken language.
