Three Thoughts on Immigration (Pocket Change)


Carlos Cortez (1923- 2005) was a lifelong Wobbly (IWW) and political printmaker, dedicated to creating affordable prints dealing with Chicano issues, Latino identity and worker’s rights. He was the son of a Mexican Indian Wobbly father, and a German socialist-pacifist mother, and identified himself as Mexican. He has been recognized for his many contributions to the art world as a respected printmaker, and was the best known figure of the IWW as a poet, artist, editor and public speaker. “When you do a painting, that’s it, it’s one of a kind. But when you do a graphic the amount of prints you can make from it is infinite. I made a provision in my estate, for whoever will take care of my blocks, that if any of my graphic works are selling for high prices immediate copies should be made to keep the price down”.
